The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam houses the largest collection of artworks by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) in the world. The permanent collection includes over 200 paintings by Vincent van Gogh, 500 drawings and more than 750 letters. The museum also presents exhibitions on various subjects related to 19th-century art history.
The museum opened its doors in 1973 and was designed by Gerrit Rietveld. The building is an example of 20th-century Dutch architecture. In 1999, a new wing was added to the museum, designed by Kisho Kurokawa. This wing houses temporary exhibitions and the museum's entrance.
Vincent van Gogh's work is organized chronologically into five periods, each representing a different phase of his life and work: The Netherlands, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise. Each period showcases the evolution of his artistic style and the influences that shaped his unique vision.

Now on display
Discover the extraordinary friendship between Vincent van Gogh and postman Joseph Roulin and his family through the many portraits Van Gogh made of them. This exhibition showcases the deep personal connection between the artist and the Roulin family, who became his close friends and frequent subjects during his time in Arles.
The exhibition features over 20 portraits of the Roulin family members, including Joseph Roulin, his wife Augustine, and their children Armand, Camille, and Marcelle. These works demonstrate Van Gogh's evolving style and his ability to capture the character and personality of his subjects. Through these intimate portraits, visitors can explore the human side of Van Gogh's art and understand the importance of personal relationships in his creative process.
Each portrait tells a story of friendship, trust, and artistic collaboration. The Roulin family provided Van Gogh with not only subjects for his paintings but also emotional support during one of the most productive periods of his career. This exhibition brings together these remarkable works for the first time in a comprehensive display.
